Lee: The Beholding Artist
40 x 30 original oil on canvas
The woman you see before you was a French impressionest artist. Lee Godie was a woman who lived in the streets of Chicago and quite liked it. Her paintings concurrently captured the face of Chicago and the persona of its dwellers.
As a schizophrenic she often fancied herself a French couture elite. You had to approach her in just the right manner, with the utmost respect. You also had to flatter her the way you would a delicate high society woman. If all was done to her satisfaction then, maybe, she would sell you one of her paintings.
Toward the end of her life a group of Chicago artists set up a trust for her and managed the sale of her paintings, so she wouldn't be taken advantage of. These kind artists found her a place to live and paid her rent until her death in 1994.
